Wheel change made easy

Torque wrench on a wheel
Once again, Easter is just around the corner. It’s time to change your tires! However, do you always go to a repair shop? You could do it yourself. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you to change your wheels quickly and safely.
01.

Choose the right time.

Using the rule of thumb “from E to O," i.e. from Easter to October, usually puts you on the right track with regard to changing your tires. However, the decisive factor is the temperature. It’s best to check in advance whether your summer tires still have enough tread.
02.

Check your equipment.

Make sure that you have everything you need beforehand. You’ll need a jack, the wheel brace, a torque wrench with the appropriate torque range, the right size socket, and a marker pen/chalk.
03.

Remove the wheels and mark them.

Before you get started, be sure to mark the tires so that they can be correctly installed the next time you change them. To retain the smooth rolling performance of your tires longer, you can swap the wheels from front to rear and vice versa. You can even swap the wheels diagonally if the tires are not directionally aligned or are different sizes. The best way to mark the tires is to use chalk or a labeled sticker (i.e. “FL” for front left). A cordless impact gun makes it easier to loosen the nuts, but shouldn’t be used for the final tightening step.
04.

Install the wheels.

The wheel nuts must be tightened with a defined torque (see manual for values). A torque wrench with as little deviation of indication possible should therefore be used. Important: First screw in the bolts loosely by hand. Once all of the bolts have been hand-tightened, you can use a torque wrench. You should ideally tighten them in a sequence of opposites to ensure that they are tightened evenly.
Please note: The torque wrench should only "click" once. Otherwise, you will exceed the required torque.
05.

Store correctly

The last step is to stack the complete wheels on top of each other or on a wheel rack. If you store the wheels yourself, be sure to put them in a dry area where they are protected from the light. Before putting the wheels into storage, they should be checked for damage and for sufficient tread depth.
