Yet again, autumn is just around the corner. – it’s time to change your tyres! However, do you always have to go to the workshop? You could do it yourself. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you to change your wheels quickly and safely.
Using the rule of thumb “from E to O”, i.e. from Easter to October, usually puts you on the right track with regard to changing your tyres. However, the decisive factor is the temperature. It’s best to check in advance whether your summer tyres still have enough tread.
Make sure that you have everything you need beforehand. You’ll need a jack, the wheel brace, a torque wrench with the appropriate torque range, the right size socket and a marker pen/chalk.
Before you get started, be sure to mark the tyres so that they can be correctly assigned the next time you change them. To retain the smooth rolling performance of your tyres for longer, you can swap the wheels from front to rear and vice versa. You can even swap the wheels diagonally if the tyres are not directionally aligned or have different sizes. The best way to mark the tyres is to use chalk or a labelled sticker (i.e. “FL” for front left). A cordless impact gun makes it easier to undo the nuts, but shouldn’t be used for the final tightening step.
The wheel nuts must be tightened with a defined torque (see manual for values). A torque wrench with as little deviation of indication as possible should therefore be used. Important: First screw in the bolts loosely by hand. Once all of the bolts have been hand-tightened, you can use a torque wrench. You should ideally tighten them in a sequence of opposites to ensure that they are tightened evenly.
Please note: The torque wrench should only ‘click’ once. Otherwise, you will exceed the required torque.
The last step is to stack the complete wheels on top of each other or on a wheel rack. If you store the wheels yourself, be sure to put them in a dry area where they are protected from the light. Before putting the wheels into storage, they should be checked for damage and for sufficient tread depth.
You’ll be well equipped for changing wheels with a set like our "721QR/20/3/1 Quick". In addition to the torque wrench, this set also includes three sockets with rim protection in sizes 17 mm, 19 mm and 21 mm which are commonly used for wheel bolts.
