No bolt tightening without the correct force application point

Image
One risk that should not be underestimated when tightening a bolt to torque is the grip position. The following article explains why it is so important that you find the optimum position and why you no longer need to concern yourself with this issue when using eClick torque wrenches.
You've preset the right tightening torque on the torque wrench, but the bolt isn't tight enough or has been overtightened? This could be due to an operating error. Because what a lot of people don't realise is that if your hand doesn't hold the tool handle in the right place, this skews the measurement of torque applied to the bolt.

Force application point affects force loading point

The explanation is that a torque wrench is calibrated for a fixed force loading point length. This is the distance between the middle of the square drive, the so-called pivot point, and a determined grip position, the so-called force application point. It's easy to find the right grip position: the mark on the handle should be located between your middle and ring finger when tightening the bolt.

What happens if you have the wrong grip position?

If the torque wrench is held in a different place, the effective force loading point changes – and the torque actually acting on the bolt therefore changes too. If you hold the wrench closer to the pivot point, force loading point is shortened. The user has to apply more force for the wrench to click. This may result in more torque being applied to the bolt than planned. On the other hand, if you hold the wrench closer to the handle end, the force loading point is extended. Less force is needed for the wrench to click. In this case, the amount of torque actually applied is less than the set value. Even a slightly different grip position may result in significant deviations as torque results from the interplay between the force applied and the force loading point length.

eClick: smart force loading point compensation

Concentration is key: it is essential that workers comply with the correct grip position; the mark should be observed at all times. In many cases, STAHLWILLE's eClick can however remedy the situation. Thanks to their ingenious electronic measuring mechanism, various sizes of the MANOSKOP® 714 eClick torque wrench, which measures digitally and clicks mechanically, are able to detect an incorrect force application point and adjust the measurement.
Thanks to this smart force loading point compensation, STAHLWILLE provides tangibly higher levels of reliability for bolt tightening. Yet another reason to switch to eClick from STAHLWILLE.

Frequently asked questions about the force application point on the torque wrench

The force loading point has an important role to play in tightening bolts to torque. The force loading point is the distance on the torque wrench between the middle of the square drive (pivot point) and the point at which you hold the handle, the so-called force application point.
